Bemidji Art Walk events including concert fundraiser
The organizers of the Bemidji Art Walk are pleased to announce a fundraising concert on the Bemidji lakefront by Brule (Broo- lay) and the band AIRO (the American Indian Rock Opera) winners of the 2006 Native American Music Awards group of the year. The concert by this internationally known group will be from 11:00 AM- 5:00 PM on Saturday, July 15th (and also Sunday, July 16th) near the tourist information center.
The concert will be a pay what you can & free will basket to support three goals for the 2007 Sculpture Walk:
* Feature Native American sculptor, Joann Birds work on the walk
* Provide more native youth sculpture workshops
* Raise money for a buffalo sculpture for the BSU American Indian Resource Center.
There will also be a live Chainsaw Sculpture Demonstration by the Flying Squirrel Studios, Ross Olsen on Sunday afternoon. Ross is a Sculptor who has recently moved his studios to Hackensack, MN. He specializes in custom carved log sculptures of animals and totems. Come and see him in action!
The concertgoers are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Cass Lake Family Center, lawn chair, or blanket. There will be lots of food available at the Art in the Park Food Court.
Band founder Paul LaRoche, adopted at birth off the Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservation discovered his Lakota heritage in 1993 after the death of his loving adoptive parents. It is now Pauls mission to be a role model and to use his music to bridge the gap between cultures. In 1999, Paul was selected as a musical ambassador and speaker for the UN Peace Conference held at The Hague Center for Peace in the Netherlands. Brule has become one of the top-selling Native American recording artists with more than a million CDs sold worldwide. The group has appeared on CNN,
Worldbeat and received the 1999 "Outstanding Musical Achievement Award by the First Americans in the Arts. The music is best described as contemporary mixed with the traditional Native American musical genre.
Current band members include Paul LaRoche on keyboards, Nicole La Roche on flute, Shane La Roche on guitars and Moses Brings Plenty on traditional drums and percussion.
